Premium Domains

IMAGINE a real estate business – a real world broker – that offers XYZ service, where “XYZ” is something very specific and unambiguous.  Whenever this real estate broker introduces themselves to new clients, they always explain “we’re in the XYZ business” or “we offer XYZ” and the text on their website, print marketing and elsewhere reflects this.

Now consider that this broker has competitors.

Likely, thousands of them and all those competitors are also saying “we’re in the XYZ business” because, well, that is THE way to describe what they’re offering.

At that point, the company that owns XYZ.com or cityXYZ.(top level domain e.g.,”Com, Net, Org”) has a MASSIVE advantage.

UNLESS they’re a household name in the mold of Barbara Corcoran in New York or Shari Chase in Northern Nevada, internet users are not specifically looking for your product, service or company.

Instead, they’re thinking in broad, general terms about their problem: “I want to learn about Southampton’s real estate market. What’s a good site to search for properties there” or “my wife is curious about lake front property values in Lake Tahoe, I need a website that shows the latest listings on Tahoe’s lake front market..”

Generic domain names play to this thought process, since they describe products and services in the way people are already thinking about them.

  • MyHamptonsRealEstate.com
  • LakeTahoeLuxuryRealEstate.com
  • SandiegoOceanProperty.com
  • SanFranciscoRentalProperties.com
  • LosAltosRealEstateAgent.com

Instead of forcing potential customers to remember something contrived like your brand or product name, just remind them what they’re already thinking about.

90% OF HOMES BUYERS START THEIR SEARCH ON THE INTERNET

More than 90% of home buyers in the United States start their home search on the internet. Never in the history of the real estate business can a broker–or agent– catapult herself into the arms of a pre-determined market need. Instant market share.

This is where prime real estate domains give you unprecedented edge, because these terms are what home buyers are searching for in search engines — or typing onto their internet browsers.

If you compete with an entrenched real estate broker with decades of experience and reputation–and you’d be hard-pressed not too have one in any city– for a prized listing, you inevitably face the seemingly insurmountable advantage of the broker’s built-up reputation.

This is what my business partner and I faced in 2007 when we  decided if we are going to compete with the branded agents and brokers in our city, we would have to start on a level playing field–the internet. I soon discovered that, online, few people had any idea who the popular agents were. They were merely looking to fulfill a need. The playing field was even.
